Ashley Sargeant

What was your inspiration?

My design was inspired by Braille, a system of writing for those who see with their hands, in which the presence or absence of dots creates a code.  The encrypted message reads:

    Lost or found,
    Weak or strong,
    Bond or free –
    You are what you choose to see.

Each time we blink, we experience a momentary blindness.  The instant we open our eyes we are given an opportunity to choose to see ourselves and the world in a new light.  In this sense, vision is a choice.  What do you choose to see?

Why is it important for you to give back?

Giving should not just be something we do.  Giving should be who we are.  I stand by the Foundation Fighting Blindness through the Botanist cause to create a place of light for those who live in darkness. 

Bio

From the top of her stylish hair to the sole of her favorite silver heels, Ashley Sargeant gives new meaning to an unquenchable exuberance for life.  Her contagious smile and sunny disposition can light up a room.  This energy translates into Ashley's dedicated design work as well as her desire to positively inspire those with whom she interacts.

Ashley graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Brigham Young University-Idaho's Interior Design Program in April of 2010.  She aspires to become an influential force in the world of design and is well on her way due to her continuing work with Dario Antonioni at Orange22 Design Lab.

As an experienced performer, Ashley utilizes creative theatrical tactics to tell stories through her unique designs - a gift that sets her work apart.  Her design philosophy is to create imaginative spaces that tell the stories of those living within.  She focuses on the emotional experience of everything she creates.  "Design is what makes me tick," she says.  "To create is what I was born to do."

Ashley has a flair for abstract collage painting and digital photography, and dreams of one day featuring her work in a gallery.  As a great appreciator and creator of art, Ashley constantly surrounds herself with it by listening to classical music, attending museum exhibits and stage productions, world traveling, and getting lost in bookstores.  In her spare time, Ashley can be found browsing thrift stores for all things vintage, finding beauty and potential in even the most overlooked objects.

Mission

Since its founding in 1971, the urgent mission of the Foundation Fighting Blindness is to drive the research that will provide preventions, treatments and cures for people affected by the entire spectrum of retinal degenerative diseases.
